Our History

The Cancer and Aging Research Group (CARG) was founded in 2006 by Dr. Arti Hurria to address the unmet need to coordinate resources, expertise, and data to support research at the cancer and aging interface. Dr. Hurria initiated CARG with a handful of national colleagues focused on cancer and aging research and seed funding from the Hartford Foundation and City of Hope. Dr. Hurria hosted the first CARG meeting in April 2007 at City of Hope Comprehensive Cancer Center and included less than 10 members (Drs. Supriya Mohile (University of Rochester), Heidi Klepin (Wake Forest University), William Tew (Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center), Cynthia Owusu (Case Western), Cary Gross (Yale University), and mentorship from Drs. Hyman Muss (UNC Chapel Hill) and Harvey Cohen (Duke University)).

The initial group of investigators collaborated on CARG’s first multi-center research study which resulted in the CARG Chemotherapy Toxicity Tool and was named one of the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Clinical Cancer Advances in 2012. The group has now grown to include over 290 members across 76 institutions and has recruited more than 5000 patients nationally onto CARG collaborative research studies. In November 2018, Drs. Supriya Mohile and William Dale, early and ongoing leaders within CARG, began serving as Co-Leads for the Cancer and Aging Research Group. In 2019, Dr. Heidi Klepin was added to the leadership team to serve as Co-Lead alongside Drs. Mohile and Dale.
